We are proud to announce our newest edition of the eSports Yearbook. In the eSports Yearbook 2015/16 you will find several interesting stories and furthermore many scientific articles. Over the years, we are gradually shifting more and more towards scientific articles.

Despite the recent boom or gain in the business context, eSports is still a niche topic in research, so we are happy this is gradually changing in the recent years. In the book, we have several authors tackling different aspects in eSports: Brenda Ho is looking into the eSports spectatorship, Rolf Drenthe takes a deeper look into the informal roles in Counter-Strike Teams. Furthermore, Viktor Barie is presenting a potential reverse gamification effect in eSports. Isaque Renovato de Araujo and Fernando Porfírio Soares de Oliveira are researching the potential of eSports being an Olympic discipline. Filbert Goetomo is taking a closer look on the connection between League of Legend teams and the owning corporations. Finally, Christian Esteban Martín Luján has analysed the ergonomics in eSports and the health perception of gamers. Our long time veteran Marc-André Messier is writing about the potential turning point of FPS games. It is quite a diverse assembling of papers and we hope you have a great time reading it. Furthermore, we hope you have a chance to cite the articles.

Call for Papers for eSports Yearbook 2015/16

We, Julia Hiltscher and Tobias Scholz, are planning a new edition of our eSports Yearbook. This will be our fifth edition (2009, 2010, 2011/12 and 2013/14). The phenomenon of competitive gaming is constantly growing and evolved into a vivid and vibrant industry that rivals traditional sports. Many media companies (e.g. ESPN) are looking more and more into eSports and we experience a new “gold rush”. Although many people are underestimating eSports as a transformational force, it has a strong impact on the media industry. This can be seen at the current buying frenzy (e.g. Twitch bought by Amazon and so on). Many companies can learn much from eSports (Researchgate).

Although, there is substantial progress in eSports, from a scientific and cultural perspective there are not that many publications.

This book gives an insight into the many facets of the eSports phenomenon. So if you would like to be published internationally in order to help out students who desperately look for eSports sources they can quote from – please consider contributing something now. This could be articles, scientific papers, essays, comics or even pictures.

Mission: Our mission is to be a reliable contemporary witness. It will be available for decades and additionally paper is a very patient material. The eSports Yearbook has been established to offer high-quality eSports articles to students and all researchers at universities. The book is a non-profit project and everybody can contribute to it. The book is already standing in universities like Stanford and the mayor of Cologne has a copy.

We will begin accepting manuscript submissions starting from now until the 15.02.2016. Please contact us as soon as possible, if you are interested in writing a piece for the book, so we can start planning.

The articles have to be written in English If you have any questions or if you would like us to help you with your topic, feel free to contact us via e-mail.

For the submission guidelines, we are completely open, and can work with everything you send in. However, please attach 1-2 sentences about yourself: I am a cute panda bear writing for Teamliquid.net; I have been an eSports journalist since 2001; My first PC was a Game Boy. Today I am a professor for Media, also teaching eSports at Carleton University, Canada.

Hello everybody, it was a bit quiet around our book-project, but we can present you with the latest version of the book today!
We wish you a great time reading it and hope you like it! There are several interesting stories and furthermore many scientific articles. We got great articles concerning marketing, perception of eSports and have a spotlight on Brazil. Furthermore articles about the work of casters and eSports in High Schools. Many interesting stories to read and cite.

We, Julia Christophers and Tobias Scholz, are planning a new edition of our eSports Yearbook. This will be our fourth edition (2009, 2010 and 2011/12). This book should give an insight into the eSports phenomenon. So if you would like to be published internationally in order to help out students who desperately look for eSports sources they can quote from – please consider writing something now. This could be articles, scientific papers, essays, comics or even pictures.

Quick FAQ:

  • We would like you to send us eSports articles, any length!
  • Articles need to be exclusively written for eSports Yearbook
  • Our book has two main purposes: Create book with eSports articles that students can quote from (because of ISBN number) so they can write about eSports at universities!! Our book is the first book worldwide that allowed students to have „classic“ sources for such cases, we had this idea because we used to have the exact same dilemma. Second purpose: Our books look super stylish: eSports companies can use our books when they work with sponsors, they can use our book as a Christmas gift – eSports journalists and gamers get the chance to get published in a real book and help to write history.
  • We accept articles from all over the world, YES PLEASE! If your English sucks, our team will smoothen all flaws out – Julia studied International Comparative Media and has a real talent for preserving the original meaning of a text in the translation/ smoothing process.

1st eSports Yearbook Starcraft Cup

As stated earlier this month we will make a Community-Cup with you. So first of all, what can you win. The winner will get a signed eSports Yearbook 2010. The Cup will be held on Thursday the 3rd of November (at the evening in Europe). Furthermore we will play on the the European Starcraft-Server, so I hope many of you have the chance to play with us. In addition to that you can come along and chat with us in battle.net (Channel: esportsyearbook).

The tournament will be held over the ESL Quick Tourney system, so an account at esl.eu will be necessary for you.

I hope you will play and chat with us, have a great day and if somebody want to cast or do something else, please do so!

eSports Yearbook 2011 – Call for Participation!

It is this time of year (after two editions it is okay to say right?), we are looking for your participation for the eSports Yearbook 2011 edition. We are looking for your contribution, and are happy to receive any kind of it. So send us your articles, interviews, essays, comics, pictures and everything else. If you have an idea but don’t think you write well enough, we help you with it. If you know somebody who should contribute, please encourage them.

Again the book will be available on Amazon and also as a free PDF version and of course will have an official ISBN number. The eSports Yearbook has been established to offer high-quality eSports articles to students and all researchers at universities. The book is a non-profit project.

The deadline will be the 15.1.2012, please send us your stuff until then, but it would be awesome if you send it earlier.

eSports Yearbook 2010 released

Dear readers of the eSports Yearbook,

The year 2010 has passed and we have been collecting stories that happened in the past year. We have been looking for authors who could write interesting stories or analyze certain phenomena that occurred in 2010. Last but not least we have written our own articles for the eSports Yearbook 2010. And we have set a new rule: eSports is from now on written with a capital S in the book. It never contains a hyphen and it never starts with a capital E. Now we are ready to publish the book, on eSportsyearbook.com (free PDF) amazon.de/uk/fr/us (printed book with an ISBN number – for the price of the print only. This is currently in the layouting-process, we will keep you informed) and on www.issuu.com (free eBook).

New this year was our search for artists who were maybe painters or comic artists. We got lucky for example when Julia stumbled over a young man in Sweden who was trying to decorate his little art exhibition at Dreamhack. She helped him and saw that his work was very powerful and unique, so she told Kee about the Yearbook. We very much hope that some artists will see this Yearbook and contact us for the 2011 issue.

If you have any kind of direct feedback to an article you read in the Yearbooks, please feel free to write to contact@esportsyearbook.com. We would definitely not only print articles but also letters from readers if you have interesting thoughts. Also contact us if you have a favourite eSports website, artist, game or anything that you would like to read about in the book! It is important to mention, that everybody can contribute to the book and so if you have interesting stories, ideas, art or anything else. Don’t hesitate to contact us and send your stuff for the next eSports Yearbook. eSports Yearbook is a project for you but especially from you.

For the release of the book we would like to have a Starcraft-Tournament with the editors and readers, currently we are looking for a date for that (and Tobi needs some practice as he is a not improving bronze-league player), so stay tuned, the winner will get a signed edition of the eSports Yearbook 2010.

Only 10 weeks until the submission deadline for the next eSports Yearbook. We already have some interesting people who promised to write a story.

These are some topics that can still be taken if you are having trouble finding a topic on your own:

  • The most interesting event this year has been the release of Starcraft 2. We would love to hear about your experiences (gamer, organizer or manager)
  • Goodbye Warcraft:  A farewell article?
  • ESWC and CPL: Familiar names, many problems
  • Blizzard vs. Kespa: How Starcraft 2 will evolve in South Korea
  • Quo Vadis eSport, after 15 years: Where are we standing
  • Pro Gamers moving for eSport: Their experiences (e.g. DeMuslim, TLO)
  • eSport grows up and now gamers have kids. How do they raise them?
  • Interviews, Art, Comics and everything you can think of.
  • Jobs in eSport. Here we want you to describe a profession in eSport.
  • The future of eSports: How are we gaming in 10 years, which kind of games? Where?
  • Quake Live – Back to the Future
  • Dota, HoN, LoL, Halo, TF2, Trackmania, WoW, RDR, BFBC2, Guitar Hero?: Write something about your game.

Yearbook 2010 – Participate now!

The eSports Yearbook 2010 will be available on Amazon just like the 2009 version. There will be a free PDF version on esportsyearbook.com and the book can be found in the google booksearch and of course will have an official ISBN number.

By the way, one of the eSports Yearbooks was taken home from the German EPS Finals 16 by Jürgen Roters, mayor of Cologne.

Please think carefully about which events were worldshaking in the eSports year 2010.

The deadline will be the last day of november (same procedure as every year for the second time) 2010.
